ETHEKWINI Speaker Logie Naidoo’s driver, who died in a smash on Saturday, was on duty at the time.
Naidoo said yesterday Nduduzi Gumede had reported to work even though Naidoo himself was away for the weekend in Tongaat.
“Like all other workers, they report for duty whether or not the principal is there or needs to be transported somewhere,” said Naidoo.
The Tribune reported that Naidoo had released Gumede and his bodyguard for the weekend as he was not on official duty.
A second person, possibly Naidoo’s bodyguard, died in the crash on the Higginson Highway bridge in Durban.
His identity, though, has not yet been confirmed.
Both men were in a Toyota Prado, paid for by ratepayers.
They collided with an articulated truck.
eThekwini municipal spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng said the circumstances surrounding the accident were still being investigated.
