          I interviewed Vancouver’s Bal Arneson on the phone yesterday, and could have talked to her for hours.

          Born in a small community in India, Bal began cooking at the age of five, for her family, using dung patties as fuel to fire a barbecue pit. Every time she made a mistake, she got a slap on the hand.

          Born and raised in a poor village in the Punjab, Arneson came to Canada at the age of 18 or 19 (she's not certain because her family was never definite.

          So she became a good cook very quickly.

          Bal came to Canada for an arranged marriage at the age of 20, but the marriage ended and she was left to raise a baby on her own, with no English skills. Shunned by her family on both sides, she started cleaning houses to make a living, and then eventually went to university, earning a master’s degree in education.
